Such masks survive in the alpine regions of Austria and Switzerland, and may be connected with hunting or shamanism, and tend to be associated with the New Year and Carnival festivals. Alfred Jarry, Pablo Picasso, Oskar Schlemmer, and other artists experimented with masks in their work.
